Test Validation

The concept of validation is the single most important process to developing a fair and defensible selection system that helps to determine qualified applicants. Validation means that the selection procedure predicts who will be a successful apprentice and employee. All selection methods should be validated. That is, aptitude tests, interviews, and work experience forms should be validated.

As an example, if an aptitude test is administered for selection, it should identify applicants that have the knowledge, skills, and ability to be successful in a training program and on the job. Applicants who have higher test scores should perform better in the classroom and at work.

This process is a statistical procedure. There are other ways to demonstrate validity, but the process described above is the ultimate goal. The bottom line, if your selection procedure is validated, it is defensible!

It is not acceptable to select any test. You must show that the test is measuring job related skills. This is determined by a job analysis, which will the topic in the next newsletter.
